Augustine looks startled, and rightly so: Saint The original painting, in the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni in Venice, Italy, depicts St. Augustine in his studio when Jerome has just appeared to him in order to announce his death and ascent to heaven. Jerome takes the form of a luminous shape in the window, the object of Augustine’s gaze.
